Lothian Climate Forests
Helping to make the Lothians more climate resilient through increasing the number of trees across the region
ELGT will be the lead organisation for co-ordination and delivery of Lothian Climate Forests projects following funding from the Scottish Government
The projects that have been identified are:
·Tree Equity- Using the The Woodland’s Tree Equity Tool (Tree Equity), target neighbourhoods will be identified where planting more trees will deliver the greatest economic, social and environmental benefits.
· Woodlands in and around Towns- Scoping areas and identifying areas for which woodland management plans should be produced
·Free Tree Schemes- Replicating similar schemes undertaken by the Million Tree City and ELGT offering free fruit and flowering trees to residents, schools and community garden groups in areas of low tree equity and high deprivation across the Lothians.
·Developing and delivering woodland networks- Expand the existing research analysis that Clyde, Fife and Forth Climate Forests have commissioned to identify the key woodland habitat corridors across their regions and where gaps need to be filled to create intact, adjoining networks
·Planting Copses, Hedges and Trees- Delivery of small-scale interventions (such as copses, single trees and hedgerows) that will have significant biodiversity and landscape value.

Outputs:
- Planting individual trees in areas of low tree equity
- Create woodland management plans
- Distribution of free, fruit and flowering trees to residents, schools and community garden groups in areas of low tree equity and high deprivation across the Lothians.
- Production of plans for woodland habitat corridors across their regions
- Planting copses , tree samplings and hedges
Outcomes:
- Increased number of trees across the region
- Better connected habitats
- Improved biodiversity
