Edinburgh's First Outdoor Gym

The Outdoor Gym is a result of a partnership between ELGT and the City of Edinburgh Council, which worked with the Wester Hailes Health Agency to consult local people, to decide on the ideal package of equipment to be installed. It includes 11 pieces of robust, high-end fitness equipment, for an all round cardio and weights workout. This project cost approximately £32,000 to complete, which was funded by the Council’s Parks and Greenspace Department and Fields in Trust. Fields in Trust is using a £300,000 grant from WREN to create ten of these innovative and accessible gyms across the UK.

The Outdoor Gym’s position in Hailes Quarry Park, beside the Union Canal means that the equipment may also be used by people using the canal as a commuter route, as well as local residents, increasing the number of users who may potentially benefit from this fantastic new resource.

“This project brings a new dimension to outdoor activity in Edinburgh and we’re delighted to have been involved in this City ‘first’"  says ELGT’s Projects Manager, Charlie Cumming. "This is a great starting point for people who want to have a go at getting in shape, for free – an added bonus in these difficult financial times.”

The benefits of outdoor exercise and activity are now well documented, with many studies showing that outdoor exercise can help to improve mental and physical health, while exercise programmes have been shown to be as effective as antidepressants in treating mild to moderate depression.  Regular exercise is key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, but cost and accessibility can be barriers to gym use. This outdoor gym gives Edinburgh residents the chance to work out for free in the fresh air, 24 hours a day.
